Thanks Patrice. It is a tricky one, I know, but I think Garrett Hardin's Tragedy of the Commons analogy explains all. On the other hand, I am aware that some libertarians claim that it is the lack of ownership that leads to problems. To me, this is reminiscent of Roger Scruton's attempt to claim that the 18th century British aristocracy (the only ones who could vote) were protectors of the countryside. No, I am sorry, Roger, we must learn to collectively restrain ourselves; and stop behaving like Easter Islanders trying to out-do each other to be the one to cut down the last tree.

Thanks very much for the heads-up on this one, Martin. I have signed the Avaaz petition to save the Antarctic Ocean.

Unsurprisingly, the other pole of our planet is also under threat, and Greenpeace has launched an initiative to try to protect that one, too.

I would also urge anyone reading this who hasn't yet seen The End Of The Line to do so -- preferably before it's too late...

Good article. I had been thinking to also amplify the message.

It's a general problem. The Senegalese always depended very heavily on fish for their protein intake. But then fishes disappeared. Senegalese starved. an accord was found, the fishing fleet went off the coast. The miraculous fisheries are back. In this case common sense worked, because the case was particularly egregious.

But, overall, the oceans are dying. The exploitation mentality is in power: kill, or be killed. Right now they kill the krill, while the biosphere is slowly strangled. But, tomorrow, the exploiters will throw smokes, mirrors, and wars our way. so indeed, polar oceans ought to be protected. because of slower metabolism there, slower chemistry, damage is much harder to fix.
