After hitting the submit* button on that post I did briefly ponder that maybe it would have been better to have talked about ‘abdicating’ responsibility rather than ‘shucking it off’… but I didn’t make the word up: wiktionary agrees with me that ‘to shuck’ can be a verb in the sense in which I used it (although it does talk in terms of shucking off clothing rather than responsibilities). A couple of the other definitions there are interesting (to fool, hoax; a scam) — I wouldn’t use the word in those ways myself, but as a friend of mine is fond of saying: ‘language evolves’ (which is, I’ve always thought, a pity, since it makes it that much more difficult to understand — and be understood by — those of our distant relatives who are separated from us by time).

Oh, look: the oxford dictionary agrees that one can shuck off as in ‘abandon; get rid of’. So there ya go

* hmm… interesting… in fact in this context the button is actually named ‘Post Comment’, but in many bits of software one does tend to hit buttons labeled ‘submit’, which now has me thinking ‘submit to what?’, and associated crazy thoughts about Cunning Plans by Galactic Overlords to get people used to… submission

Is “SHucked-off” a word you have invented; a euphemism for a word with an F; or a typing error (e.g. for a word with a CH)?

The problem is not so much how they see themselves as how they are seen by those who elect them to their roles, and then, election excitement over and responsibility shucked off, walk away from ‘politics’ until the next election. And yes, I’m as much at fault as the next person: it’s another symptom of our badly broken (and yet, it seems, totally unfixable*) political system.

* Come the revolution, I’ll be there (cheering from the sidelines like the true coward I am…)

Absolutely! When one scientist resigns from the IPCC review process – he or she is offered up as proof of corruption. When the numbers are not in their favour we are told opinion polls don’t matter.
